BEETHOVEN: STRING QUARTETS OP. 59, OP. 74 & OP. 95
The quartet has recorded more than 10 albums for Claves Records, mainstream works as well as less well-known scores, some of which have earned the reputation as reference recordings. The four members of the ensemble now take on one of the great monuments in the quartet repertoire: Beethoven’s so-called “middle” quartets, the three “Razoumovsky” Quartets, Op. 59, the “Harp” Quartet, Op. 74, and the Quartet “Serioso”, Op. 95.
Five works composed between the years 1806 and 1810 by a Beethoven who was at the height of his powers, both as heir to the great classical tradition of Mozart and Haydn as well as an adventurous explorer of new musical realms; they are precursors to his last “timeless” quartets. The quartets, in particular the first two “Razoumovsky” quartets, are thoroughly romantic in character and represent true challenges to the interpreters.
