THE BIG SOUND OF BUBBA BROOKS
When I heard David "Bubba" Brooks for the first time at a rehearsal for the “l Love Jump Jazz" production [Claves Jazz CJ 1095], l was completely fascinated by his full sound. It reminded me Ben Webster, Cobb, Hawk, Lockjaws, Quebec and even Byas. I immediately knew that this underrated, shy, humorous man with the straightforward style would have to make a recording for me. His interpretations of the ballads [Mood Indigo, Body and Soul, Moon River, Willow Weep for Me] are sensitive and lyrical, and numbers like Blues For Tina, Robin’s Nest, Song Out of My Heart, Pocket Corner swing like in the good old days.
David “Bubba” Brooks, now 73 years old, has one of the biggest, authentic sounds around. Bubba, who plays all of his music by ear, was thrilled and moved to have the chance to record his first solo album, and we are thrilled to present it — a live recording [without rehearsal] that exemplifies the spontaneity and freshness of jazz improvisation.

(2013) The Big Sound of Bubba Brooks - CJ 1395
From Coleman Hawkins to Lester Young and John Coltrane, no other instrument as produced so many stars in jazz as the tenor saxophone. In addition to their own style, certain musicians give you the impression of telling a story when playing. David Brooks certainly belongs to this category.
