ARRIAGA: THE THREE STRING QUARTETS
The premature death of Juan Crisostomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola (Bilbao 1806 – Paris 1826) ended the promising career of a gifted performer, composer and teacher. Arriaga first began performing as a child-prodigy on the violin, appearing in cafes as well as in the noble salons in his hometown Bilbao. He soon turned to composition and quickly won critical acclaim and international recognition. The violinist Vaccari compared the young composer to G.B. Viotti, a master from the French school of violin playing. Arriaga’s quartets are characterized by innovative harmonic progressions as well as structural balance and attractive melodies.
These compositions are without a doubt unique models and strongly personal works which confirm the astounding mastery that their young composer had achieved at an early age. The renowned Swiss ensemble Quartet Sine Nomine performs these works with verve and spontaneity.
