SCHUBERT: THE COMPLETE SYMPHONIC WORKS, VOL. IV
The 18-year old Schubert needed less than two months to complete his Symphony No. 3 in D Major, even though he composed numerous other works at the same time. It is marked by a number of stylistic innovations, many of which were connected to the dance music which was in fashion at the time.
All of Schubert’s overtures were intimately bound to the world of Viennese theater in spirit. As was typical for the time, they are very loose in form: a slow introduction followed by a movement in sonata form (but usually without a development section).
