MARTUCCI: CHAMBER MUSIC FOR PIANO & STRINGS
Giuseppe Martucci was perhaps the most significant representative of Italian instrumental music during the second half of the 19th century. As an artist he masterfully fulfilled both typically nineteenth century roles of impassioned interpreter and inspired composer. His mature works assumed a more reflective, contemplative style which united romantic sonorities with Parnassian elegance. This formal discipline also characterized his chamber music.
Martucci’s earlier works such as the Quintet in C Major op. 45 and the Trio in C Major op. 59 unite the piano and the strings in a breathtaking stream of energy. Thematic elaboration is succeeded by a free succession of concentric episodes while also occasionally colored by folklorist elements. The Giovane Quartetto Italiano and Mario Borciani, piano, offer a charming and convincing performance.
