DEBUSSY: MÉLODIES POUR VOIX ET PIANO
His personal selection of 19 songs for this recording spans all of Debussy’s periods, from the composer’s earliest songs inspired by his relationship with the singer Mrs. Vasnier to the more expansive, cyclical collections, such as those to poems by Musset, Bourget and, above all, Paul Verlaine. Debussy’s masterful settings of these texts are supremely interpreted by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and his accompanist Hartmut Höll.
«Nature’s thousands of enigmatic wonders have finally found their translator» – Cocteau’s statement about Claude Debussy (1862–1918) is beautifully confirmed by this recording. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, the famed interpreter of German Lieder, has also demonstrated a special affection for the repertoire of the French song throughout his career.
