Volume 15 marks the final CD of the Basque Composers Collection initiated in 1997. Throughout its history, the Basque National Orchestra has been known for raising the profile of Basque music, its staunch policy of commissions and first performances, and, with this project, promoting what has today become an essential catalogue of Basque music. Through this collection, which begins with Jesús Guridi and ends with Carmelo Bernaola, the Basque National Orchestra has fundamentally recovered Basque symphony music of the 20th century.
Between Jesús Guridi and Carmelo Bernaola is a diverse roster of gifted composers, some well known while others less so, albeit prolific composers of symphonic works. This aspect adds to the value of the collection. The list of featured composers includes Pedro Sanjuán, Valentín de Zubiaurre, Beltrán Pagola, Luis de Pablo, Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, Aita Madina, Tomás Garbizu, Aita Donostia, Pablo Sorozábal, Francisco Escudero, Andrés Isasi, Jesús Arámbarri, José Mª Usandizaga and Jesús Guridi. Support from Eresbil, the Archive of Basque Composers, has been vital to the success of the project.
