Dormont is determined to have his ward Giulia marry Blansac. Giulia, however, has already secretly married Dorvil. They are able to see each other only in the shelter of darkness; Dorvil sneaks into the house every night by climbing a silk ladder. Giulia would like to free herself from Blansac by having her cousin Lucilla marry him. The mix-ups and confusion that take place at the nightly rendezvous on the silken ladder are numerous, but by the end everyone finds the right partner.
