Immersive sound creation for vocal ensemble and electronics.
THE PROJECT
For several years now, Félix Bergeron (musician and composer of electronic music under the name IYNNU) and Jérémie Zwahlen (choral conductor - CHŒUR AUGUSTE/Chanson de Fribourg - and composer) have been collaborating on several choral creations. These various collaborations gave rise to the desire to develop an original creation combining choral art and electronic music, enabling them to explore the possible interactions between these two musical arts, at first sight very different and distant.
Indeed, bringing together the tradition of choral music with new technologies and electronic music means bringing together tradition and innovation, a music based on secular roots and a music in perpetual evolution with the times. It means creating and experimenting with a repertoire that looks resolutely to the future, but is based on a heritage that needs to be enhanced.
Thanks to this project, Félix Bergeron and Jérémie Zwahlen are the winners of the Suisa Foundation's Get Going scholarship in 2019. The grant was a precious help in their research, enabling them to explore, try out and experiment with the interweaving and fusion of these two worlds and their respective musical codes, in order to develop an original common repertoire.
The result is an immersive sound creation: SPANDA. Using the voice and, more broadly, the body as compositional material, interacting with a multi-broadcast electronic device, it was presented to the public from September 07 to 11, 2022 at the Forum de l'hôtel de la Ville de Lausanne (sold-out performance). The choice of a venue not initially intended to host such a creation reflects the composers' desire to propose a project that could be appropriated by the public space.
As a follow-up to this highly successful first phase of creation and composition, the two composers set themselves the goal of thinking up and conceiving a recorded version of the SPANDA project. However, the challenge was to retain the immersive aspect of the live version initially created - the audience was arranged in a circle at the center of 8 loudspeakers and 5 singers in motion. So it wasn't simply a question of recording the compositions, as would be the case for a more classical repertoire, but rather of re-imagining the project for audio broadcast using today's new immersive technologies (binaural technology and Dolby Atmos in particular).
It is the result of this immersive experience that Claves Records is releasing in December 2024 in CD and Digital formats.
