R. STRAUSS: CONCERTOS FOR WIND INSTRUMENTS
The three works on this recording, the Horn Concerto No. 2, the Oboe Concerto and the Duett-Concertino for Clarinet and Bassoon, can be characterized as a «homage to Mozart», particularly to his music for winds. Strauss brings the spirit of Mozart once again to life in a new, contemporary language. The four outstanding soloists on this recording: Ingo Goritzki, Thomas Friedli, Klaus Thunemann and Bruno Schneider, are accompanied by the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Matthias Aeschbacher.
This recording earned belated honors in Anthony Burton’s «Building a Library» program for Radio BBC London. Various interpretations of the oboe concerto were compared in this broadcast. Anthony Burton closed his program with the following words: «Claves recording with Ingo Goritzki is at the top of my list. The sound is clear and very beautiful, yet never tiring. It also has humor and sprightliness. The Lausanne Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Matthias Aeschbacher performs admirably; the winds in the orchestra complement the soloist.
This recording is the best of all. All in all, it is a valuable rendition of this imaginative and charming concerto.»
(1990) R. Strauss: Concertos for Wind Instruments - CD 9010
The works which Strauss composed during the last years of his life demonstrate a stylistic transformation in which he imposed more and more radical constraints on his mode of expression in preference for a music in which luminosity and lucidity ruled.
