Florville wants to marry Sofia, Gaudenzio’s ward. Gaudenzio, however, has already promised her to a certain Signor Bruschino, who is known to all only through letters. Filiberto has locked up Bruschino’s son because he owes him a good deal of money. Florville pretends to be Bruschino’s son in order to marry Sofia. The deception, confusion and commotion quickly snowball, but marital bliss is found in the end.
